What is the importance of Arizona’s manufacturing employment?

Manufacturing products account for the largest portion of Arizona’s exports to both NAFTA partners, and global markets; together they make up the core of Arizona’s export-based economy. The dynamics of Arizona’s manufacturing employment provide a general measure of Arizona’s capacity to build and sustain an export-based economy.

What is measured?

The total manufacturing employment indicator includes employment in all manufacturing industries identified as Sector 31-33 in the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Included are subsectors of manufacturing production from food and beverages manufacturing to machinery, computer, and transportation equipment manufacturing.

How competitive is Arizona?

To gauge Arizona’s relative competitiveness in the U.S. - Mexico region, manufacturing employment dynamics are compared with other U.S. Border States in terms of relative measures such as percentage shares. Data are provided on monthly and annual bases with indices of percentage change between observed periods. For Sonora and other border states in Mexico, IMMEX program employment is used as an indicator of export-based economy.
