What is the importance of U.S. exports of electric & electronic products through Arizona’s BPOE?

Electric and electronic manufacturing is a key component of the North American production sharing economy. By dollar value, electric and electronic manufacturing products comprise the principal commodity exported to Mexico through Arizona’s border ports of entry. The dynamics of electric and electronic manufacturing products flows through Arizona’s border ports of entry reflect the composite effects of manufacturing integration between Arizona and Mexico. It also reflects trade dynamics between Mexico, Canada, and other U.S. states that use Arizona’s border ports for movement of goods.

What is measured?

This indicator includes U.S. exports of electric and electronic products to Mexico that are exported through Arizona’s border ports of entry. Data include all exports of electric and electronic products that originate in Arizona together with exports from other U.S. states. U.S. Exports in this category via all Arizona BPOE reported by the U.S. Census Bureau include Phoenix and Tucson. Totals for AZ BPOE reported by the U.S. Census Bureau in this category include Tucson and Phoenix, as they serve to facilitate exports to Mexico by air freight.

How Arizona compares?

Among Arizona’s six border ports of entry, Nogales facilitates the largest volume and value of southbound exports of electric and electronic manufacturing products. San Luis is distant second, followed by Douglas. To gauge Arizona’s relative competitiveness in the U.S.-Mexico border region, data are provided for a selected number of major ports of entry in Texas and California. Value expressed as percentage change allow for comparison of trends in the southbound movement of electric and electronic manufacturing products at individual ports, as well as for the state as a whole.
