Machinery/ Equipment Products

Overview

What is the importance of export of machinery and equipment products through Arizona’s BPOE?

Machinery and equipment manufacturing forms a key component in the North American production sharing system. By dollar value, machinery and equipment manufacturing products comprise one of the top commodities exported to Mexico through Arizona’s border ports of entry. The dynamics of machinery and equipment product flows through Arizona’s border ports of entry reflect the composite effects of both the manufacturing integration between Arizona and Mexico, and between Mexico, Canada, and other U.S. states that use Arizona’s border ports for movement of goods. Among Arizona’s six border ports of entry, Nogales facilitates the largest volume and value of machinery and equipment products exported to Mexico. San Luis is distant second, followed by Douglas.

What is measured?

This indicator measures the dollar value of U.S. exports of machinery and equipment products that are shipped to Mexico through Arizona’s border ports of entry. Data include all exports of machinery and equipment products that originate in Arizona, together with exports from other U.S. states. Totals for AZ BPOE reported by the U.S. Census Bureau in this category include Tucson and Phoenix, as they serve to facilitate exports to Mexico by air freight.

How competitive are Arizona’s border ports of entry?

To gauge Arizona’s relative competitiveness in the U.S.-Mexico border region, data are compared with a selected number of major ports of entry in Texas and California. Values expressed in percentage change allow for comparison of trends in the southbound movement of machinery and equipment products at individual ports, as well as for the state as a whole.
