What is the importance of bus crossings?
The dynamics of bus crossings through the Arizona border ports of entry reflect the composite effects of both the economic ties in the border region, and border crossing procedures that affect cross border flow and wait times. Since the implementation of more stringent procedures for border crossings following the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks, the volume of buses crossing the border has increased.
What is measured?
Data are reported for the number of buses crossing the border, and include only northbound crossings. Total crossings are approximately double the northbound volume. The selected southern border ports of entry used in this analysis are: Douglas, Lukeville, Naco, Nogales, San Luis, and Sasabe in Arizona; Calexico East in California; Santa Teresa in New Mexico; and, El Paso, Hidalgo, and Laredo in Texas.
