Arizona imports from Canada rose in December while other trade fell

Arizona exports to Mexico were down 21.4% over the year in December, totaling $609.4 million. Similarly, Arizona exports to Canada were down 14.7% over the year, coming to $221.1 million.

Imports from Mexico saw a notable 6.7% decrease from last December, totaling $923.7 million, while imports from Canada managed to escape the trend, rising 31.8% to $218.8 million.

The value of U.S. exports through Arizona BPOE totaled $927.6 million in December, down 4.1% over the year. U.S. imports through Arizona BPOE totaled $1.9 billion in December, up an impressive 19.1% over the year.

With the December 2023 trade data release, the preliminary annual figures are available. Arizona exports to Mexico in 2023 fell 8.3% from 2022, totaling $8.0 billion. However, 2023 exports to Mexico were higher than 2019 levels. Exports to Canada similarly beat their 2019 levels but also showed a 5.1% increase from 2022 to $2.7 billion.

In 2023, imports from Mexico showed a solid 7.9% increase to $11.8 billion. Meanwhile, Arizona imports from Canada barely managed to beat their 2022 levels, rising 0.1% to $2.6 billion. Imports from Canada remain below 2019 levels. 

The value of U.S. exports through Arizona BPOE in 2023 reached $11.9 billion, a small decrease of 1.0% from 2022. U.S. imports through Arizona BPOE showed substantial growth, increasing 13.1% from 2022 to reach $23.8 billion.
